From 17 December 2023 to 25 February 2024 at the Civic Gallery of Trento in the historic centre.
From an idea by Vittorio Sgarbi. Curated by Gabriele Lorenzoni
In Margherita Manzelli's only show (1968), large-format paintings and drawings inhabit the spaces of the Galleria Civica. The exhibition itself was designed and designed by the artist, making the entire exhibition a work of art.
The exhibition project gives an account of the artist's most recent and partly unpublished production: many of the works were created specifically for the occasion, in particular the monumental triptych Dark is the heart of beauty, which gives the exhibition its title. The others belong to the last decade on a path of growth that leads to today.
A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Ravenna, Manzelli began her career by first approaching installation and theatrical performances and then dedicating herself with stubborn consistency to painting and drawing. Over the years he has progressively abandoned the performative aspect, leaving painting at the centre of his production.
Layered, erased, decomposed and then recomposed, Manzelli's painting superimposes the evocative and the representative aspect. The subjects of her canvases are female archetypes, almost archaic figures that stand out against a background as synthetic as it is expressive.
