From July 19 to October 5, 2025 at the Civic Gallery of Trento you can visit the exhibition "Nebojša Despotović. All our lives"by Daniele Capra and Gabriele Lorenzoni. Despotović's painting is intimate, familiar, introspective.
In recent years, the Serbian artist has put aside the gigantic archives of images that have long inspired his work, to turn to the nearest reality, to the everyday.
It is precisely the most recent production that constitutes the path of the Galleria Civica in Trento, curated by Gabriele Lorenzoni and Daniele Capra. On display 14 works made in recent years and never exhibited before to which is added a large monumental polyptych produced for the occasion: In the garden of my life, consisting of four large pictorial panels. Here the artist abandons the synthetic, anti-realistic colors, and the material painting so present in his work and turns to sepia, black and white tones. On the contrary, it does not change the restless, decomposed compositional construction.
The recurring subjects of recent years are the members of his own family: the exhibition, conceived as an emotional and intellectual continuum, recounts the passage – not linear – between mourning for the recent loss of his mother and the life shared with his family. This dual temporal and affective axis – past and present, mother and daughters – is not represented as a simple comparison of eras, but as a complex stratification of identities and gazes on the world.
The exhibition is accompanied by an upcoming catalogue published by Mart, with contributions from curators Gabriele Lorenzoni and Daniele Capra and a dialogue between the artist and journalist Marina Lalović, Rainews24.
