From 28 December 2023 to 29 February 2024 at the Biblioteca della Montagna - sat a biographical exhibition will be set up where you can discover the editorial ties of the Dolomites UNESCO heritage fund.
As part of the activities related to the recognition of the Dolomites by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, a bibliographic exhibition is proposed with works belonging to the "Library and Documentary Fund dedicated to the Dolomites - UNESCO assets" established at the Biblioteca della Montagna-SAT. The project investigates the iconographic representation of the Dolomites in canvas editorial blankets, a generally little-studied aspect of the history of the book in Italy. The editorial canvas binding, which developed between about 1860 and 1930, is characterized by the illustration of the blanket through the printing of metal plates with drawings that summarize the subject of the book. For their creation, the publishers of the time used the work of first designers and photographers and then illustrators and engravers who, with their own creativity, translated the cover image into printing clichés giving rise to an infinite variety of decorations specially designed for each book. The Biblioteca della Montagna-SAT preserves specimens dedicated to the Dolomite peaks of evocative workmanship. The research has deepened the knowledge of the editorial work of a choice of these documents that are part of the "Dolomiti-bene Unesco" book collection, investigating the various aspects that have led to the final product: from the various professionals involved (publishers, photographers, designers, binders) to the choice of colors and materials used, up to the relationship with the graphic construction within the book and the illustration apparatus. The small, but rich, temporary exhibition consists of two showcases with the precious original volumes, 6 explanatory panels and some accompanying geographical maps and posters.
The exhibition was curated by researcher Daniela Pera.
