The Badia di San Lorenzo is one of the oldest and most significant places of worship in the city of Trento. Located in the heart of the historic center, along the street that connects Piazza Duomo to the train station, the church has its roots in the early Middle Ages: its foundation dates back to the eighth century, although the current appearance is the result of centuries of renovations and restorations
Once a Benedictine abbey, the Badia di San Lorenzo was part of a monastic complex that for centuries represented an important religious and cultural reference point for the city. The church still preserves valuable historical evidence, including fragments of medieval frescoes, Romanesque sculptures and traces of ancient monastic structures.
On the outside, the simple and elegant façade is flanked by a Romanesque bell tower, while on the inside, the sobriety of the unique classroom and some interesting decorative elements stand out, such as capitals and remains of pictorial decorations.
The Badia di San Lorenzo is also a place of particular archaeological value: under the church, remains from the early Christian and medieval periods have been discovered, which can be visited thanks to excavations and enhancement interventions.
Today the church is still officiated and represents an oasis of silence and spirituality in the heart of the city. It is often open to visitors who wish to discover an important piece of Trento's religious and architectural history.
