Arthur Miller, the mainstay of twentieth-century American dramaturgy, wrote "The Crucible" in 1953, in full McCarthyism, and on the impetus of that state of social aberration and collective hysteria he composed a dramatic fresco, in which he distilled the dullness and ferocious dementia that under certain circumstances invade the human soul.
