IN MEMORY OF THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BOMBING OF THE SAN MARTINO DISTRICT IN TRENTO

On Monday 13 May in Trento, the National Association of Civilian War Victims and the Fondazione Museo storico del Trentino, with the collaboration of the Comité San Martino dentro, commemorate the 80th anniversary of the bombing that devastated the district of San Martino on 14 May 1944. After a religious celebration, some moments of reflection will follow at the Bookique Literary Cafe, which will also be attended by some fifth classes of the "Raffaello Sanzio" primary school in Trento.

During the Second World War, bombs began to be dropped on the city of Trento on 2 September 1943, in the Portela area, near the railway station, the probable main target of the bombing. The following year, on 13 May 1944, the district of San Martino, north of the historic centre, was particularly hard hit. About 130 people died that day, 52 homes were destroyed, and 124 were severely damaged. The church on Via San Martino was almost completely destroyed.

To remember these tragic events, the National Association of Civilian War Victims (ANVCG) and the Fondazione Museo storico del Trentino on Monday 13 May propose a morning of reflection that will begin at 9.30 am with the celebration of Holy Mass in the Church of San Martino. A walk will then follow in the district, where Anna Pinotti will guide the participants through history and current affairs.
At 11.00, the literary café "Bookique", in Via Torre d 'Augusto 29, will host a meeting introduced by Fabio Mattevi (president of ANVCG), in which Giuseppe Ferrandi (director of the Fondazione Museo storico del Trentino) will retrace the events of those tragic days.
The meeting will conclude with some considerations, addressed especially to the students of the participating schools, on the civilian victims of yesterday and unfortunately of today, with the particular memory of a person who was the protagonist of that sad day: Don Beniamino Tarolli.
Finally, at 2.30 pm, a wreath will be laid at the Trento cemetery in honour of the civilian victims of the war at the monument dedicated to them.
