Starting from the pioneering English publishing project, The Badminton Library of Sports and Pastimes, and from the manuals for winter sports of the early twentieth century, the meeting inaugurates the cycle by exploring the historical roots of modern sport, in the transition from spontaneous physical activity to codified practice; the fundamental role of images – and photography in particular – in the cultural construction and dissemination of sport as a mass phenomenon will be highlighted.
Before the meeting, at 5 pm, a short guided tour of the exhibition.
