An authentic treasure is hidden in the basement of the Cathedral of Trento: the early Christian Basilica of San Vigilio, founded at the end of the fourth century AD and attributed to Vigilio, the third bishop and patron saint of the city. For centuries, his remains were kept inside the famous "ark of San Vigilio", located in the centre of the hall.
The archaeological site, rediscovered about fiftyyears ago, preserves traces of the subsequent transformations of the original building, including the addition of sacelles and crypts. Today it can be visited thanks to an immersive educational path, enriched by videos, interactive workstations and virtual reality headsets.
If you enter the Romanesque Cathedral, don't miss the chance to go down into its basement: a few steps will take you back in time, to discover the city's Christian roots.
