The Pezzata Mòchena Goat (Pletzen Goes Van Der Bersntol in the Mòchena language), present since the fourteenth century in the Valley of the Mòcheni, on the mountains of the Lagorai and later very widespread in all areas of Trentino, a decade ago was about to become extinct, until a group of passionate breeders committed themselves to safeguarding and enhancing this breed and its products. Today Pezzata Mòchena is mainly present in Valle dei Mòcheni, on the Altopiano di Piné, where two Breeding Associations operate, and is gradually spreading to Alto Perginese, Bassa Valsugana and Val di Gresta, with a total of about three hundred heads throughout Trentino.
Goats are curious, intelligent and very greedy animals. Thanks to their agility and strength to reach their favourite food, they can make long and steep journeys, which is why they are also useful for recovering uncultivated land, which is difficult to reach by mechanised means.
The Capra Pezzata Mòchena produces excellent milk, which is milked after the kids are weaned and can be transformed into tasty fresh and aged cheeses, yogurt and ricotta. These are products of the highest quality, with the best prerogatives of goat's milk, which is increasingly used, as an alternative to cow's milk, for its high digestibility, nutritional properties and low allergenicity. Also ideal for babies, thanks to the organoleptic characteristics that bring it very close to breast milk. It's no coincidence that the products of Capra Pezzata Mòchena have been included by Slow Food in the"Ark of Taste", the catalogue of the most precious flavours in the world, waiting to become "Slow Food Presidium".
