Nordic Walking Viote – long route

A wide circular route around the Piana delle Viote, featuring alpine landscapes and historical landmarks. An itinerary immersed in protected nature, enriched by biodiversity, the Alpine Botanical Garden, and the evocative Terrazza delle Stelle.
The route forms a wide loop around the Piana delle Viote, passing by the Austrian barracks and skirting Cima Palon. The Piana delle Viote hosts the Tre Cime del Bondone Integral Reserve, a protected natural area established in 1968 covering 223 hectares, which includes the Piana delle Viote and reaches the Tre Cime del Bondone (Cornetto, Doss d’Abramo, and Cima Verde).

In the central part of the basin, there is a peat bog of about 20 hectares with a particularly rich flora and fauna. The Conca delle Viote also hosts the Viote Alpine Botanical Garden, which, with its ten hectares, is one of the largest and oldest in the Alps. A treasure trove of alpine biodiversity managed by MUSE – Science Museum of Trento, where among rock gardens, lakes, and peat bogs, you can admire over 2,000 rare plant species from around the world.

The Viote are a lively place but also a privileged observatory for stargazing. Here is the Terrazza delle Stelle astronomical observatory, recognizable by the large mirrored sphere above it.

Of historical and architectural interest is the former Austro-Hungarian military complex, built by the Imperial-Royal Army at the end of the 19th century to serve as dormitories, kitchens, a hospital, and a workshop for repairing artillery pieces. It was part of a larger chain of fortifications defending the city of Trento.
