A wonderful surprise in the centre of Trento! Unexpectedly emerged during the restoration work carried out on the facade of Palazzo Niccolini, the frescoes dating back to the end of the 16th century present themselves today in all their beauty. Standing in front of the building you can admire an exceptional series of paintings depicting the Translation of the Holy House of Nazareth where Jesus lived, arrived in flight in the church of Santa Maria di Loreto. On the sides are the figures of Saint Sebastian and Saint Rocco, and a Christ who pours blood from the side into the chalice. Significant is the presence of the coat of arms of Madrid, which recalls the noble Trentino family. The attribution of the frescoes is not certain, although it seems to date back to several artists of the Venetian school.
The frescoes that decorate the façade of Palazzo Nicolini, in the historic centre of Trento, represent one of the most elegant examples of urban Renaissance pictorial decoration in the city. Created between the 16th and 17th centuries, the frescoes give the building a strong artistic and symbolic value, transforming it into a true "narrative facade".
The decorations are developed according to a refined painted architecture, with fake frames, pilasters and geometric scores that harmoniously dialogue with the structure of the building. Within these boxes appear allegorical figures, ornamental motifs and classic references, typical elements of Renaissance language that enhance the prestige and culture of the Nicolini family.
The pictorial cycle also had a representative function: through symbols and cultured images, the façade communicated the social role and artistic taste of the owners, inserting itself into the broader context of Renaissance Trento, strongly influenced by Italian and Central European models.
