The Roman Villa of Orfeo is a fascinating archaeological site located in Trento, which offers visitors an immersion in the daily life of a stately residence of the ancient Tridentum.
A jewel of ancient Tridentum
Built in the first century AD and inhabited until the third century AD, the villa was located outside the city walls, in an area reserved for the most prestigious residences. The structure is divided into two bodies separated by a central courtyard and included numerous environments, including a spa with changing room and room for the hot bath, as well as gardens.
Orfeo's mosaic
A distinctive element of the villa is the magnificent polychrome mosaic that decorates the hall. This mosaic floor, which is about 65 square metres long, depicts Orpheus playing the lyre and enchanting the beasts. The mosaic is considered one of the most important artistic testimonies of Roman Trento.
Rediscovery and restoration
The villa was discovered in 1954 during construction work and opened to the public in 1966. However, a devastating flood in the same year caused severe damage, necessitating lengthy restoration operations. After further interventions and new archaeological investigations, the site was reopened to the public on 21 June 2023, offering a renewed and accessible exhibition itinerary.
