Good Practices for Smart Water Use

When we’re on holiday, we often don’t pay much attention to how we use water — we tend to take it for granted and use it carelessly, as if it were inexhaustible. But in reality, it isn’t!
Even when staying in accommodation facilities, it’s important to follow a few simple good practices to use this precious “blue gold” responsibly.

According to the latest United Nations World Water Development Report, by 2030 the world could face a 40% global water shortage. The availability of drinking water is gradually decreasing due to climate change and global warming, but also because of increasing demand linked to population growth and the rising consumption of industry and agriculture.

It’s more important than ever that each of us does our part to reduce consumption and limit waste — starting with a few simple good habits summarized in this short ten-point guide:

  1. Whenever possible, choose a shower instead of a bath.
  2. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth, shaving, or doing other tasks.
  3. Use the dual-flush system on toilets according to your needs.
  4. Whenever possible, run washing machines and dishwashers only when fully loaded.
  5. Wash dishes or other items in a basin, not under running water.
  6. Wash vegetables in a bowl, and reuse the same water to water plants and flowers.
  7. Water your garden and plants sparingly, preferably after sunset, using recovered or rainwater and drip irrigation systems.
  8. Use reusable water bottles instead of single-use plastic bottles.
  9. Repair or report leaks from taps or toilets promptly.
  10. Cover your swimming pool with a floating cover — it will help reduce evaporation.

Energy Saving

Reducing energy consumption is now essential to limit the depletion of fossil fuels — but above all, to reduce pollution and fight climate change. This is true even when you’re on holiday, as a guest in an accommodation facility.
Here are some simple tips to help avoid waste.
As a destination, we promote a series of good energy-saving practices for everyday life.
With just a few small actions, you can waste fewer resources, reduce your home’s environmental impact, and save on energy costs.

Appliances

  • Turn off appliances when not in use.
  • Use ECO programs for washing machines, dishwashers, and other devices.
  • Choose modern, energy-efficient appliances, preferably A++ class or higher.
  • Use washing machines and dishwashers between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. to take advantage of lower energy rates.
  • When washing or dishwashing cycles are finished, don’t leave the machine on standby (flashing light).
  • Clean the filters of both machines regularly — this improves efficiency.
  • Minimize opening the fridge and freezer doors.
  • Clean and defrost your fridge and freezer regularly to keep food fresh, prevent odors, and improve efficiency.
  • Set the fridge temperature between 1°C and 4°C and the freezer at -18°C to save energy and money.
  • Make sure food is not hot before placing it in the fridge or freezer.
  • Before going on holiday, try to empty your fridge and freezer.
  • When using the oven, avoid opening the door too often while cooking.
  • Prefer fan-assisted or convection ovens, which distribute heat more evenly.
  • If you use air conditioning, make sure windows are closed.
  • Check and clean air conditioner filters at least once a year — dirty filters increase electricity and gas consumption.
  • Set the air conditioner to a temperature no more than 6°C below the outside temperature.

Lighting

  • Make the most of natural light for indoor illumination.
  • Replace regular bulbs with LED lights whenever possible.
  • Always turn off lights when you leave a room or the house.

Computers, Phones, and TVs

  • Enable the “energy-saving mode” on all your devices — it extends battery life.
  • Reduce screen brightness.
  • Don’t leave PCs or TVs on standby or with a screensaver active.
  • Unplug computers and TVs when they’re turned off.

Cooking

  • Use a pressure cooker to shorten cooking time and save energy.
  • Always cook with lids on pots to reduce heat loss.
  • Prefer medium-low flame settings — they consume less energy even if cooking takes slightly longer.

Before You Go on Holiday

Always turn off the main switches for water, gas, and electricity before leaving.
You’ll avoid unpleasant surprises when you return — and prevent unnecessary energy consumption!

Reforestation Projects

Across the provincial territory, there are several projects that strengthen and give new momentum to the tradition of caring for the landscape and our land.

Waste Sorting

For the waste cycle to be virtuous and environmentally sustainable, it is essential that an efficient collaboration develops among all of us, with the awareness that:

Reducing is better than sorting. It is necessary, for us and for the environment, to start considering waste already at the moment of purchase: choose products with less packaging, try to reuse before buying again, opt for returnable or bulk products — these are all choices that reduce waste production.

Sorting properly pays off. Managing waste at home or at work carefully means disposing of most of the waste correctly, significantly reducing non-recyclable residual waste. Our tariff system rewards those who produce less residual waste, so sorting properly is advantageous.

What should I do concretely?

It’s very simple: depending on your type of user, you will receive containers and bags of different sizes.

  • Follow the guide to understand what belongs to each waste category.
  • Consult the Dolomiti Ambiente “Riciclabolario” for any specific doubts.

Once your waste has been sorted, place the containers outside on the dates indicated in your calendar.
Remember: once emptied, containers must be returned to your property and not left along the street.

All items left outside the containers, such as bulky or special waste, can be taken to our Material Collection Centers.

Also remember:

  • If you are just passing through, pack bags in your suitcase or backpack to sort waste and take it home.
  • If you are walking in the city or mountains and do not immediately find a bin, do not throw away your waste — keep it in your pocket until you find a bin.
  • Reduce packaging and waste even before leaving. For example, bring refillable bottles instead of plastic bottles.
  • If you stop for a snack or quick meal in a store, always prefer fresh and loose products over packaged ones.
