Trento and its territory
Trento is a city deeply connected to its territory: an “archipelago city” that interacts with the river, hills, and mountains, characterized by diverse agricultural areas ranging from cultivated valley floors to high-altitude pastures. This complexity makes it the prototype of the modern Alpine city, capable of combining territorial identity, quality of life, research, and innovation. The presence of the University, research centers, and cultural institutions of excellence contributes to making Trento a city of knowledge, attentive to sustainability and the well-being of its citizens.
Even in the agricultural sector, Trento expresses a strong productive vocation linked to the characteristics of its environment. Alongside Trento DOC, a symbol of mountain sparkling wine production, there are fruit and vegetable crops that make up the productive mosaic of the largest agricultural municipality in Trentino. The area boasts numerous PDO and PGI products certified by the Qualità Trentino label, twenty Slow Food Presidia and, more recently, the city's first De.Co. label, awarded to Sardagna chestnuts. This heritage testifies to the richness of the local agri-food sector and its commitment to protecting biodiversity.
Organic farming also plays a significant role: in 2023, certified agricultural land reached 27% of the UAA, exceeding the European targets set by the Farm to Fork strategy for 2030. This figure confirms the region's focus on sustainable production models.
Bio-logicA is part of a broader food policy initiative launched by the Municipality of Trento in 2016 with the Nutrire Trento project, developed in collaboration with the University as part of the Unicittà protocol. The project aims to ‘feed the city better’ by promoting conscious consumption, sustainable production, and strengthening relationships between actors in the local food supply chain. This commitment has been further consolidated with the signing of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact, the WHO Healthy Cities Network, and the Network of Organic Cities.
With this in mind, Bio-logicA takes shape as an open space for information, reflection, and proposals on the prospects of urban agriculture and the new challenges related to food and healthy lifestyles.
The 2026 edition
scheduled for March 12-15, is dedicated to the theme “Biodiversity, beyond organic,” questioning the future of organic farming, the limits of certification, and the profound value of biodiversity, which is now under serious threat.
The theme will be developed through four interconnected dimensions:
- Biodiversity in agriculture, as the protection of cultivated varieties and agroecological practices;
- Biodiversity in green spaces, to rethink the role of nature in cities;
- Biodiversity on the plate, as a rediscovery of seasonality and food richness;
- Cultural biodiversity, understood as a plurality of knowledge, traditions, and visions.
The program
will open on Thursday with a meeting at the Department of Sociology dedicated to food democracy and the right to food. Friday morning will be reserved for schools, with the award ceremony for the contest “Biodiversity, a world of variety around us,” while in the afternoon there will be a conference at MUSE on biodiversity and food, concluding with a solidarity dinner against waste at Villa Sant'Ignazio. Saturday will be dedicated to the local area and districts, with activities throughout the city and a conference on the situation and prospects for organic farming. The evening will feature journalist Stefano Liberti and Stefano Panzeri's show “Semi” (Seeds). On Sunday, at Trento Fiere, the dialogue between Trento and Rovereto will open a reflection on the relationship between food and cities.
Inside Trento Fiere, the farmers' market will play a central role, with the direct presence of more than 30 local producers, workshops, and activities for all ages, organized in collaboration with agricultural and local associations. Side events and widespread initiatives will complete the program, making Bio-logicA 2026 a collective experience that focuses on food as the key to imagining a more sustainable, fair, and resilient future.
